All I Have To Do Is Dream

Oh Boy (remember Buddy?) This tune has sent me on a nostalgia trip! This is one of the first songs I ever heard and loved as a kid. I would repeat it endlessly, singing each of the harmonies whichever I felt like at the time. Those fabulous harmonies and really simple and clear guitars. We had it on an old 78 and it used to be bundled on our family record player that you could stack 6 singles on at a time (very advanced!) Other favourites at the time were Elvis's Jailhouse Rock and Heart Break Hotel plus Ray Charles's Georgia and Buddy Holly etc etc. I know I'm showing my age, but what the hell. It was just the perfect song for teen-age unrequited love!

So does anybody know who originally wrote it? Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Elvis all did it but I've always assumed for some reason, (right or wrong) that it was an Everly Brothers number?

It was written by the husband and wife songwriting team Boudleaux and Felice Bryant who were also behind many of the Everly's other hits such as "Bye Bye Love" "Problems" "Wake Up Little Susie" and "Bird Dog". I wouldn't admit to having written Bird Dog myself but obviously the rest of them, and many more others, are classics.

Thanks si16, I had a google but failed to find that info. Yeah, I think 'Bird dog' was probably a bit tongue in cheek.

Those first few lines could have been written about you 737:-

Johnny is a joker [he’s a bird)]
A very funny joker [he’s a bird]
etc

Ah how times change. My generation had the Violent Femmes and Nirvana with songs such as 'Add it Up'.
