  Chord changes and Blackbird

Hey kirk, have you got the roman numeral progression for blackbird?

I have never heard a change more beautiful than a IV chord to a iv minor.. i can't describe it but it just sounds so beautiful. Also in blackbird when it goes from Em to EmM7 its a similar kind of thing. Maybe you can describe why it sounds so good?

It is a beautiful change , the IV to the iv, isn't it? It's a fairly standard one too ... Georgia has it, many of those jazz/blues tunes from yesteryear have it ... it was almost part of the songwritng formula back then. Desperado has it ... By moving to the iv, you're really changing key momentarily.

To try and describe why it sounds so good is a bit like describing why two colors go together nicely. They just do.

I'm also the author of PlaneTalk - The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book. The lesson that this book, slide-rule and DVD teach is the most powerful of all: the 'trick' to seeing the entire fretboard as friendly, familiar territory. If you're beyond the beginner stage -- you know your chords, scales, maybe even modes -- but you're still wondering how to turn it all into music, how to invent and improvise, how to access all the bits and pieces, then this is the book for you. You will also be able to join the private PlaneTalkers' Forum and discuss the simple visualization technique with me and many others. - Read more here .

Testimonials

Hi Kirk... For years I've played finger-style guitar, memorizing licks, but never really understood "why" they work. The first of this year, I started playing my Strat once a week in a band. Your Planetalk book has helped me tremendously, to work out more leads around these shapes. The possbilities seem endless. I think I'm becoming a "lead guitar" player. Thanks Kirk.
