Can't find my way back home - tab question

Kirk,
I'm thinking this must just be me, since I don't see this question on any of the other threads. So here goes - it sounds (at least to my ear) like there are more notes being played on the movie file than what appear on the tab at least on some of the bars (others it almost seems like less). Am I hearing things?

So its not just me - I'm having a hard time synching up the first measure of the second line.

Hi guys ... I just had a look, listen, and checked the tab and midi ... it seems pretty right to me. I do take quite a lot of care transcribing what I play to the the tablature program, which in turn generates the midi. From time to time I may add a note to the tab that I didn't quite connect with in real life though, or you may be seeing a finger moving that looks like it's picked a note but didn't ...

The fact is though, this was just one pass through the chords, of my own version of this tune ... there's no need to copy it exactly. So long as you're playing the right chord shapes, you can alter the sequence of notes, add to them or subtract from them without affecting the integrity of the tune.

  moving notes?

I'm a novice, but I think the trick is to move the timing on the high two strings
around until it sounds lyrical. For the first couple weeks, it didn't sound like a
song, but as my fingers learned to move without thinking, I could adjust the
timing of the plucking either ahead or even with the base line so it sounds like a
song on top. I haven't listened to Kirks recording in a couple weeks so I think
this may not even be close, but it sounds like a song to me.

Your fingers are doing well on this dnmcumber, but tune that guitar up! The best, quickest and easiest way to improve your sound is to be perfectly in tune, and that's easy to do these days ... just get youself an electronic tuner. They're cheap and totally reliable.

But, like I say, good pickin'!

Thanks, Kirk, for the tips. I ordered a GA-40 on the internet (what did we do before the internet?) today and will post again after I retune and practice more and fix
some of the lyrical holes. I bought the guitar used a couple months ago and have a set of stings, but I won't change them unless I cannot get it in tune. Do the round knobs on the fixed ends of the string screw off? pull off? crow bar?

When I started I didn't think I would learn this one, but having your video with the tabs and a forum is the only way for an old dog to learn.

The pins pull out. They can be in pretty tight so you may have to work at it a bit.

Also, be sure not to pry the pins out at an angle, as you may elongate the holes they are seated in. The pins themselves are tapered, so once they start to move, they will come the rest of the way easily.
Some string winders (that you buy from your local guitar shop) have a built in puller just for this purpose, though I have not used them.
I just use a sidecutter (wire cutting pliers), but you have to take care not to damage the pin...

Side cutters and a little finesse definitely saves those words for use on more deserving occasions AT .....

Take #2. My $20 tuner arrived and even an idiot can work it! I rushed through a
replacement recording that includes an attempt at some more lyrics on the high notes.
I also picked up the pace a bit.

I still am missing some lyrics on the 2nd half of the song, so I need to start studying Kirk's recording again.

Took me 2 months to learn the first lesson! Should the pace pick up or does it
take that long to memorize the finger movements on finger style songs? This is
only a 1 minute piece. I guess longer songs must take months-years to perfect, no?

That's coming along. What a difference being in tune makes. I hear what your saying about memorizing tunes. I have friends who join bands and say they have two weeks to learn the 40 songs in the play list like it is no big deal. I want to strangle them. I guess it is just time and experience that develops that ability. It takes me 3 weeks to a month to learn a 4 to 6 page tune.

  brick wall?

I am looking for some tips on the lyric in this. I am still on this first lesson and have learned a lot, but now am focused on the quality of the lyric. Here is the first 4 bars. I have been randomly accenting different patterns, but am still not as close as I would like. The closest I get is:

1st bar- accent 2-2AND-3AND-4AND
3rd bar- accent 2AND-3AND-4AND
4th bar- accent 1-2-2AND

I know there is 45 years of practice that is different, but am hoping there is some
tip out there to try and get this sounding a little closer. My ears pick it up but
I don't know how to make the guitar do it.

BTW, I did restring it (what the strings aren't all black?) and it did help the tone
quality a bit. No more excuses, the rest is me.

original by: mike@honet7.att.comFrom: "Douglas French (ECE 535)" CAN'T FIND MY WAY HOME By Steve Winwood From Blind FaithThe original recording uses a second overdubbed guitar track to fillin various rhythms and riffs thus making playing CFMWH solo adaunting but not impossible task. The basic picking pattern below forms the foundation for everythingelse. Get the basic picking pattern down cold then add in whateverflourishes and riffs that you can squeeze in.Play with a pronounced syncopation in the rhythm. Emphasize thefirst bass note in each measure, picking the second bass note ofeach measure lightly, if at all.h = hammer on, p = pull offBasic picking pattern:2/4 1 : . : . 2 : . : .E---------------------------|---------------------------|D---3--------------3--------|------------------3--------|G---0--------0-----------0--|------------0-----------0--|B---------0-----------0-----|---------0-----------0-----|A---3-----------3-----------|---2-----------2-----------|E---------------------------|---------------------------| 3 : . : . 4 : . : .E---------------------------|---------------------------|B------------------3--------|------------3-----3-----3--|G------------0-----------0--|---------2-----------2-----|D---------0-----------0-----|---0-----------0-----------|A---1-----------1-----------|---------------------------|E---------------------------|---------------------------| 5 : . : . 6 : . : .E---------------------------|---------------------------|D------------------1--------|------------------3--------|G------------2-----------2--|------------4-----------4--|B---------3-----------3-----|---------5-----------5-----|A---------------------------|---------------------------|E---1-----------1-----------|---3-----------3-----------| 7 : . : . 8 : . : .E---------------------------|---------------------------|B------------3--------------|------------3-----3--------|G---------2-----------0-----|------------2-----2--------|D---0-----------------------|---0-----------0-----------|A------------------------3--|---------------------0--2--|E---------------------------|---------------------------|Use the same syncopation throughout. ================================================== ======= D7sus G Come down off your throne Gm/Bb D And leave your body alone F G D Somebody must change You are the reason I've been waiting so long Somebody holds the key G A Asus D Dsus D Well I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time Em G F#m Em D And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home Come down own your own And leave your money at home <- lyrics on album jacket but... ..."And leave your body alone" is sung on the album. Somebody must change You are the reason I've been waiting all these years Somebody holds the Key I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time Oh and I'm wasted and I can't find my way homeRepeat the following using the chords from the first verse, ending on a D major: But I can't find my way home But I can't find my way home But I can't find my way home But I can't find my way home Still I can't find my way home And I aint done nothing wrong But I can't find my way home============================================== ==========================Notes on chords:The opening chord is a D7sus missing the fifth. This resolves naturallyinto the following G chord. The chord in the third measure is an inversion of a Gm with the flattedthird in the bass. The two suspended chords in the chorus are very important as they leadthe progression into the chords that follow.=========================================== =============================
This is from the site www.danmanmusic.com/songs2.htm always my first stop to look for lyrics, chords and tablature.
