  Open Air

I just started to try this one. It sounds so easy, looks so easy but it's just plain MEAN! I don't know which is being twisted most, my brain or my fingers. It really makes you think I'm learning heaps about chords and notes up the fingerboard so thanks again Kirk

Carol

Best thing is to break it down by measure. Work the fret hand first as this will be easiest. Once the fret hand fingers know where to go work on the picking pattern. Many of the phrases repeat. Measures 1 2 3 are the same as 5 6 and 7. Then work the A#dim chord found in measures 9 and 13. After playing this measure by itself repeatedly your fingers will find the G on the B string (8th fret) and the A# on the E string (6th fret) without looking. After mastering the A#dim the A#5 is a snap. Anyway.. you get the idea.

The best thing is that this piece of music sounds fantastic at any speed. So practice it slowly. You'll get it. I didn't think I would manage it at first either. Enjoy it, feel it, express it.

Hats off to Kirk for another great piece and another great lesson.

Mike

What Mike said. Slow it down and add a bit more expression. A vibrato here, a slide there. Make it yours. The speed will come over time.

Thanks for the tips guys - the real brain/ear twister is hearing/playing higher notes on 'lower' strings....I know that's part of what makes it 'music' and that it's really what we need to learn/get familiar with and I'm loving it....it was just that it was 'messing' with my ears (a good thing)........and how does Kirk make it all look so easy and sound so good??? (in other words, my usual frustration......and the inspiration to keep me practicing more)

Hi Neil, 'soon' is such a 'stretchy' word, and it's one of my favourites....."If only I had more time."... etc etc etc

Another wee cracker, Kirk. It is a piece full of mischief and wonderful to play. Thanks again.

Carol, I feel your slight victory..as I too, have plodded through it, but not that I would play it in front of anyone...My problem is that one time I use my thumb for the bottom three, then the next time I use my index for the 3rd string when my thumb is not doing anything, the the next time I use mny ring finger for the b string, when it should be the middle finger..I get so frustrated because when I see Kirk do it, he is so precise...I'll chalk it up to growing pains.... I know it's an achievement...You go, girl!

Isn't it interesting: the different levels of "nailing" a tune down. I find that there is one level where you can play a tune well by yourself -- then another level to play it well for someone else! -- MORE PRACTICE -- then a room full of people -- PRACTICE TIL THE COWS COME HOME (well that's what we say in Alabama)

Well, that's me anyway -- might just be self consciousness --

Peace all -- Rick

Kirk this a lovely piece and it sounds sweet played on your Palm. I have never seen one before, let alone played one. Are they generally affordable and how does it play compared to your Gibson? Hope this not prying but I am genuinely interested.

Kirk, what a beautiful, beautiful song. I just finished learning it. Now to perfect it, that's another story! I'll post a recording when I can.

It's very counter-intuitive for the fingers at times. It's not like learning a conventional song, that's for sure.
