Takamine GS330S/Martin DXK2/Yamaha FG730-NT

Hello and Happy New Year!!

I just my Takamine GS330S for Christmas, and I really do not like it’s sound, compared to Yamaha’s or Martin’s.

My question, I have several options for a trade-in:
Martin DXK2 Koa Acoustic
Yamaha FG730-NT

I have tried the Martin DXK2, I DO LIKE the sound, action and the feel of the neck. I know it is some type of pressed wood, virtually indestructible in any environment, no warping, etc.

I have yet to try the Yamaha FG730-NT, since they were expecting another shipment in about another week. This guitar came highly recommended by the guitar guru at Guitar Center. He said, for it’s price range, no one can touch it; solid top, bottom, and incredible sound.

Does anyone have an opinion on either of these guitars?
Thanks very much.
Joseph

Hello and Happy New Year,
I've had a Yamaha FG730 VCS before which was a nice sounding and well made guitar, however, i found it slightly awkward to play (because i often play whilst seated and it is fairly large - so no real fault of the guitar there, i should have found that out before buying). I found it to be great for strumming and has a good volume, but ended up swapping it after 3 months for a Tanglewood TW15 guitar (adding £40) after trying one in a guitar shop. It was shaped more like the classical guitar i'd owned before, just felt more comfy and easier to play and I preferred the tone and i'm happier with the sound overall and i just knew straight away that i wanted to keep it (i'll just have to keep away from guitar shops for a while now). This is my personal experience though, it depends how you play i guess. Good luck with your search!

If your guitar is brand new you may have to give it a period of time for the wood to "open up". Typically a new guitar's tone can improve dramatically when/if this happens, and when it does... Be sure to keep it humidified somewhat. I have used a Dampit device with my new Taylor, and now after a month or so, WOW! But for that month I was sorta missing my old Takamine.

I like the HPL martins a lot but I know you would be WAY happier with the ones with the solid spruce tops. The sound is much more pleasing in the long run and the price is about $50 more. It's the best guitar $50 you will ever spend.

As to size it's a good idea to try the 000 sixe as well as the dreads. Both are $549 for the Solid topped models.
