Guitar Building

Wondering if anyone here has built there own guitar and what the results were? Some links would be appreciated.

Probably just a pipe dream but am feeling motivated about it. I've been looking at the 59' Sunburst Les Paul re-issue at the local GC for the past month. All I can do is stare at it. The most beautful Les Paul I've ever personally seen. At 5K+ it's a tough nut besides not playing well enough yet to justify it. I'm mechanically inclined but don't work with wood much.

I would suggest starting with a cheap kit to make all your mistakes. You need the most tools for the body so another thought is to buy a raw good quality body from ebay.

Ok. Got some leads off ebay. Have a kit for about 150 and templates/plans for a 59'

Too busy for me. I saw one at my buds shop. It was done by a local and it was very far from the quality of the carving of this guy.

That one is a liiiiiiiiiitle over the top for me. Why did I keep thinking of Prince as I looked at those pictures???

Bluesyzep - keep us posted on the progress of your kit. I've considered building a "Partscaster", but need to do a lot of reading and learning before I attempt it.

That's where I'm at now. My last post might have been mis-leading. I didn't start anything yet but have some ideas now. Have to think long and hard about what it entails. The kits seem the likely place to start. The other option would involve starting from scratch with templates that are available off e-bay.

Just got back from GC. They had a couple of books on maintenance which might be helpful but nothing on building.

These are a cheap way to learn the basics.

That's the kit I was looking at. It's a good deal. Flamed maple top is a plus. Downside is bolt on nech but then it wouldn't be much of a kit. Aren't Gibson's one piece? Other downside is no trapezoid inlays. Bummer. Still a good place to start.

I think I may build myself a seven string Strat sometime soon. I used to have a proper Schecter 7 string, but I sold it and have regretted it ever since.

There's a company out of Healdsburg Ca. called Luthier's Mercantile International that has everything you could possibly imagine for that avocation. I think theres a company called Stewart-Mcdonald that specializes in electric instruments. I've built a few acoustics, and theres nothing like picking that thing and realizing that you made this music from the ground up.
Best of luck

Good kits! The fella that owns Grizzly Tools makes guitars as a hobby.

Bluesyzep, there's a book called Make Your Own Electric Guitar, written by Melvyn Hiscock and published by NBS.
It has good reviews and could be useful to you. You should find it on Amazon.com
Good luck with the project, I'm looking forward to seeing the result.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
