The 2 most important things besides good quality and good setup and playability are HUMBUCKERS and ATTITUDE. It's like buying any guitar, but you scale it down to those with hummies and metal attitude. Strat copys don't sound or look very metal for example... Ibanez and Jackson has a lower end models for about $300-400 new, and they are EXCELLENT, so I can recommend those two brands.

How many does not really matter, but if you want to vary the sound a bit, at least 2, and most will have 2, or 2 and 1 single coil. The ones that IMO are best for metal are EMG's and Seymour Duncans, but I'm not sure whether these are available on cheaper guitars or not.
I also suggest that he ask the shopkeepers, and most importantly try around guitars and picks one he likes.

Nigel Tufnel had 5-6 humbuckers on one his guitars!
Entry level Ibanez guitars are a good place to start. They come with Ibanez pickups, so if he wanted to upgrade the pickups he would get a great sounding guitar. Dimarzio are also a good option for humbuckers, and a little cheaper than EMG and Seymour Duncan.

I posted a bargain priced guitar on ebay that belongs to a friend of mine. Good bang for the buck if you like a small body. No question that it is for metal.

Esp guitars are good too. think metallica megadeath, COC etc.
And you can pick up good priced entry level guitars, that still still sound sweet

Angus uses mostly Sg's though, depends on how much you're willing to spend I guess.

Lots of sg clones out there. A friend of mine just picked one up for a 100 bucks that he is going to use just for slide. Killer fat tone.

PRS and Gibsons are probaby he best fattest tone your gonna get, but they are pricey...
Ibanez is good, but I dont like them very much... (just preference i think...) ESP's are good guitars, but you have to go for the higher end guitars to get the really nice guitars.
I play a Jackson and that just has killer tone, the guitar sounds wild and it plays like a dream... I must add, I bought it second hand from a pawn shop and I replaced the original pickups because they were microphonic...
I would suggest you have a look at a Epihone Les Paul, or an Epihone SG, or a Jackson... Get a nice American made Jackson, or even a Japanese one, but stay away from the korean models. (as with most korean guitars) The EPI's are great little guitars and witha easy pup change you could have it sounding like a true Gibson... (the quality on those guitars are good)
I wont be able to give you any advise on BC Riches... Sorry...

I wouldn't recommend B.C Riches... They've went down in quality a great deal lately. They have become like Gibson, even if you buy a B.C Rich for $1500 or more, it still has sound and quality like one ten times cheaper... B.C Riches aren't a good starters choice.

As a gibson les and epi les owner who plays them each and everyday can tell you that they are good axes.I stand on a stage each and every weekend battling it out with other bands.i use my guitars to pay my bills and i depend on them to pull through and i never ever had a problem with my gibson or epi.I also have a dean and a ibanez and a fender and i still lean to my gibson.Al depends what your wanting to do with it.Electronics is a major part! The best way to do things is try them out.everyone here has a opinion on whats best or whatever but that might not be whats best for you!Do some research, weight, wood, electronics etc etc feel it ,how does it fit in your hand are youi comfortable with it?like i said its what you want and intend to use it for lots of metal guitars out there. Some cheap that are still good axes!with a lil electronic work on it they can become great axes!Ibanez rg series are low end but do the job esp if your broke and wanna play so will a epi les!And also when i started playng we didnt have the net we listened to the sound that the other players was producing and went and found out what they used what settings they set things at!And then went and compared what they used to other products that may be cheaper but will give you same effect. Also what style of axe do ya like are you a flying v fan ,a strat shaped fan,les paul fan?maybe what ya like dosent produce the sound ya want. But it can be made to do that!Dont buy a axe then regret getting it down the road.get the style you like the rest can be adjusted to make you happy!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
