We'll need a little more info from you to help you get started...like what type of music do you want to play, don't want to buy an acoustic if you wanna thrash out to death metal....what kind of budget are you working with?

+1 To X4String's comments I wana Rock, if you could tell us what music you're into and what kind of budget you're looking at and also if you're buying off the net or heading for your local guitar store, if you choose the guitar store option you can go along to the store and they would be able to put together a set up for you based on your budget, the only thing I am not personally fond of is the ready made starter packs the set up on the guitars can be hit and miss and the Amps are usually pretty third rate so I wouldn't go for one of them that's only my opinion though, the members here will be able to point you in the right direction with a bit more info and get you started

Cheers

Chris

You'll probably want to go used. You can get decent MIM tele's and strat's for about $250 around here. Depends on what you want to play.

Whereabouts are you I Wana Rock, some guitar stores sell used gear if that's the way you want to go or if your in the US, Craigslist could be useful, do you have any friends that play guitar, if you're buying used and you haven't played before it's useful to take a guitar player along to check out the gear with you

Those questions are so subjective that there are no right or wrong answers. Some people like a Strat through a Fender amp, others prefer a Les Paul through a Marshall, etc. There have been so many different combinations used by different players that nobody can definitively say "use x guitar through y amp". It's a matter of listening to the guitarists you like and experimenting with different setups until you find one you're happy with. Your first guitar and amp will most likely NOT be your last, if you stick with it.

As a beginner, you're probably best off buying a decent guitar that feels comfortable to you, and a solid-state modeling amp such as a Roland Cube or Vox Valvetronix. These will give you more than enough different tones and effects to play with until you have more experience and start developing firm ideas about what gear you really want.

As far as other gear (cases, etc.) - all you really need is a guitar, amp, cable and picks. A tuner is a great help too, because your guitar will sound horrible unless it's in tune. Cases, effects pedals and all that other stuff can come later - they're not necessary for you right now.

IMO, the Fender Starcaster isn't a good buy despite its low price. It is a low-quality "budget" guitar and you could do a lot better for a few dollars more. Even a Squier would be a big step up from a Starcaster. The Yamaha Pacifica 112 Strat isn't much more expensive than that and is a MUCH better guitar.

Hi I Wana Rock

Here's a link to the Pacifica, and a link to the Roland 15 watt Cube practice Amp,It's the only Roland cube in your price range if you're buying new it will leave you tight on budget, these are just suggestions, you could get a bigger Amp second hand for around the same price so have a chat with your friends one of them might even have some gear to lend you

If you do wish to thrash out to death metal however, you may feel free to ask GFBANDB's resident "Ibanez*someday*shredder".

Same way how I found my RG, it sorta "found me" lol

No, it did not oneday show up at my doorstep like an orphaned puppy!!!

The best way I could say it is "you have to let it 'find' you, not you find it".

If you understand.
