Switcharoo - is it a good thing?

Well I've been researching high and low and was about to take some advice on this forum and purchase the Squire Tele for $169 along with a 10x Roland Amp for $125.

Last night my wife came home carrying a guitar bag. I asked what she did and she told me she stopped by the music store near our home and picked up a surprise. I unzipped with fear not really know what she may have been sold. As I looked more closely, I found a Godin Freeway Classic in black pearl. She said that the "rest of the stuff" was in her car. I went out to her car and found a 20X Roland amp. I don't think I need the 20X but it was only $30 more.

The guitar is pretty sweet looking and feels good as well. My only concern is what she spent. She paid $420 for the guitar and bag. I've not see much on this brand of guitar. GC doesn't carry it. What is the word on the street for this guitar? I can return it and purchase something else if its not a good choice.

Thanks in advance

Hi stlguitar, The word on the street is it is a pretty neat guitar, Godin have a high reputation, here's a link to some reviews, I'm almost certain it's your guitar. For you it is how much you like playing it and if you like the sound but it is a good guitar to get.

Godin Freeway Classic: Harmony Central User Reviews

Price wise your Wife is spot on really, the price ranges from $350 to $599, the $350 are probably second hand or special offers, your Wife got a good price, it's a great present you're a lucky man to have a Wife that brings home surprises like this, mine doesn't although I keep dropping hints

Stlguitar, I think your wife did something wonderful for you! Yes, every guitar has to be the right "fit' for us, and that is something that you have to decide (sometimes the neck either feels just right, or all wrong in our hands).

First of all, I would be lavishing praise on my wife for being so thoughtful. Then I would help her understand the individual nature of guitars, so that if it just didn't feel right, she would understand that it was not rejection of her gift. Let her be a part of the process, since she has already shown that desire.

Having said all that, I think you have a good guitar there, as long as it fits you, and the color is what appeals to you (I just took back a bass guitar because I had talked myself into accepted a different one than the one I really wanted. It was just a cosmetic difference -flame maple top vs. a simple wood grained appearance. I ended up taking back the wood grained bass, and talked to the owner of the store about some reservations with the flame maple, and after a professional check out and set-up, I went home with the flame maple bass). If this guitar if just not "your guitar," then take your wife with you to find "your guitar." She obviously wants to be part of the action!

You have yourself an excellent guitar there. Godins are a huge bang for the buck and a quality instrument. You owe your wife a night out on the town.

Thanks for the advice! I agree it was a very nice gesture of her to surprise me. I do like the guitar. Unfortunately, I'm as green as they come. I'm hoping to be able to play a piece of a song in a couple months. I'm on Lesson 1 of the Learn and Master Guitar by Steve Krenz. So far the only thing I know for sure is that my fingers are either handicapped or they belong to someone else. They sure don't listen to my brain

StL, I understand completely! Everytime I start learning something new, I feel like I'm back at square one! It is all about muscle memory though, and once your fingers catch on, each new exercise comes a little quicker, because you are building on something that you have already learned.

Hang in there, and know that it is all coming, and it will be worth the effort. And hey, you've already got your wife behind you!

Good for you, stlguitar. You have a very nice guitar with that Godin, and I think you'll really like the 20x, I've had mine about 6 months and find it perfect for home practicing.

You'll get the hang of it, just takes time, it's better to have a good quality guitar like the Godin to learn on, it gets really frustrating with a really cheap one that doesn't have a good tone, your guitar will give you a good sound, keep us posted on how you get on and have fun with your playing Stlguitar

Congrats on your new guitar and amp! I just did a quick Google search (not familiar with Godins), and it looks like your wife got a good deal on it....most of the Freeway Classics I saw were in the $500 range.

You've got a good wife there - that was incredibly cool of her.

Man...you better write her a love song. I just bought my black sparkle Godin Freeway Classic about 3 weeks ago. I paid 475 plus 50 bucks for shipping. Put it to you this way, I went to Vegas specifically to get a 3 grand Mosrite. I ended up with a Godin simply because of the neck and the feel. I think its the best bang for the buck. To be honest, I wish I got the blue one but maybe that will be my next. So far I have no complaints and I live in Hawaii so the humidity is really high and it hasnt affected it yet. Im sure you will like that guitar but dont forget, shower your wife with appreciation and love songs. You lucky dog LOL!!
