  Stormy Monday BT- WITH VOX

Hey all- figured I'd throw this out there for you. I put this together when I was getting the hang of the laptop I record on, so it's not the greatest quality and all the tracks were first time takes, so it's not the most perfect, but I think you'll like having a go at a classic!

It's in G- have fun, and I look forward to hearing some smokin' solos and fills!

Here's my humble attempt at soloing over Stormy Monday

This is a great backing track cshude - and I don't know why no one else has done a lead over it, but I had to try. I certainly am not near the category of "smoking" but this is the best I was able to do with where I am at currently in learning to play this type of solo. It has rough sections, but I think also has it's "moments" that hopefully will justify it's inclusion here.

Anyway, I'm hope others will contribute as well (and most likely kick my butt!) cause I really like this BT and I think you've got a great voice for this kind of music!

It is much more difficult to jam on a track with vox because you have to know where all the spaces are for fills and lead runs. It means your playing has to be melodically strong because you don't have a lot of time to build up into something. Most singers would not be happy if you stepped all over their vocals. Instrumentals and songs are two different beasts requiring a different mindset in my opinion.
Take your best licks, Jim, from what you played and look for spaces to play them in.

You're right allthumbs. I did treat this as a conventional backing track - rather than one with vocals... I'll try as you suggested.

Here's take two!

I hope you find it better - I really did try not to step on the vocals (although a few times the vocals came in just a tad earlier than I expected, but I think I got better at staying out of their way as the song went on). And you know, I was surprised, but I found this one a lot easier to do than the earlier one, because I had the time while the vocals were going on to plan what I wanted to play next! It gave me breathing room and a chance to collect what I had heard and put it together into my "response"... Hopefully this will show up in the playing and I'm not putting my foot in my mouth here.

But I'm happier with it... (and the sound is cleaner too, which I like)

Way better Jim. Sometimes less is more. Much more melodic. Congrats. Nice take.

Thanks allthumbs!

And sorry about stepping all over your vocals on the first take Chris...

I think I'm learning more about playing on this site than I could with a pile of books and videos (except Plane Talk of course! )

Real nice- I'll be doing my own take when I can get a few minutes to set up the electric rig for recording.

Great job Jay - and welcome back from beautiful Paris!!

You were really cooking on that - more and more so as you got into it.

Great take!

Thanks first of all for your kind words!

The volume of your solo was really low (at least on my finiky system) so I had trouble hearing some of your playing. But what I could hear sounded really good! So - if you have the time to remix it so the solo is more audible, that would be great.

This really is a great BT, and I was wondering why no one else was doing it.... So, thanks to you and Jay for bringing this one back alive.

Nice job, guys. It's always very cool to hear different takes on the same tune, especially blues- everyone has his/her own style.

Never got around to setting up my electric, so
I figured I would just post up my original single take- here goes....
