How to Play Slide Guitar in Standard/Dropped-D DVD by Kirk Lorange

If you really want to spice up your playing, slip a slide over your pinkie and add it to your musical vocabulary. There's no need to re-tune your guitar to an open tuning, just stay in standard or lower that bass string down to D. Kirk shows you how in this 70 minute DVD, talking and playing you through the basics, vibrato, muting, playing single note lines, finding all the chord flavors (they're all there!) and mixing it all into one very neat hybrid style of playing guitar.   Hubert Sumlin Band

I saw Tom Petty play in Atlantic City a few weeks ago and to my surprise, the opening act was the Hubert Sumlin band. They did a great many Howlin' Wolf numbers (as you might expect) and more than a couple of slide numbers. Hubert did not play slide but stuck to his signature licks. Unfortunately, I think I was the only one in the crowd who knew who Hubert is. Still, I was thrilled to have seen this legend in person.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend checking out his band.

Wow, what a bonus that must have been.
Serendipity even.
Hubert is certainly a legend.
How was his playing?
Still good after all these years?
Man, he must be gettin long in the tooth by now.
Most of those early Chicago guys were either shot, stabbed, or run over by a train.
Great to hear that Hubert is still gigging!

I'd rather a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Hubert Sumlin is a fantastic guitarist. He is also a really nice guy. He has a pretty active ongoing tour. I believe he mostly plays with 'pickup bands' in the locations he travels to.

Check out the photographs I have taken of him over the years at:

  Hubert Sumlin Band

Hubert had flashes of brilliant guitar work. His singing left something to be desired (but I don't recall him singing with Wolf). The band did a great job of helping Hubert along when he needed it. This was not really a good fit for a Tom Petty crowd but what was really cool was Tom Petty came out and introduced Hubert himself with obvious warmth. I doubt Petty does that for very many opening acts.

Yes, Hubert is past his prime and has suffered some health problems but some of his guitar work gave me chills. This guy was and is the real deal.
