  Fox 13 Memphis gig...

I'll be playing some slide & stuff on Fox 13 Memphis this Friday between 7am and 9am. I'll be backing Martin Anderson along with the band. Its a plum of a gig, with a viewing audience of about 2 million or so. Lots of visibility. I'll be spankin' the plank with the Tele and the Bogner. If you're in the area, check it out! We are bringing some digital camcorders plus a laptop loaded with protools, so maybe I can get a good pro quality audio/video for you to check out soon.

I did that show last summer. They do it outdoors in that ampitheatre off of Handy Park? Nice folks. Bring your own coffee. Thats an early call.
I love Memphis. Great town.
Good luck!

Who did you play with?
I did it about a year and a half ago with a singer/songwriter named Jamie Baker. We did it at the same place, and it was a lot of fun. Man, was it tought waking up that day at 4am! We will be broadcasting from the Hernando, MS courthouse this time.

I'll do my best!
Didn't you just do some regional broadcast in Australia?

LOL! I was waiting for that.
I wasn't playing, I did a promo segment for the Antiques Roadshow with Good Morning Memphis.
I did get to play guitar in the Antiques Roadshow jugband though. That made air nationwide. 12 million viewers plus re-runs forever. Originally taped in Memphis too.
My 15 minutes of fame comes in 3 minute segments.

Randy,
Yeah, I did, but it was radio, not television.
Lucky, 'cause I've got a rough head in the morning!

Hey guys,

We did the gig.
Up at 4am, 4 cups of Starbucks, and off to Hernando, MS to soundcheck at 6am. Everything came off well, but there were some "issues" along the way. First off, the heat and humidity down this way is intense, and it made the maple fretboard and strings really sticky. Then, we had 18 wheelers driving by the courthouse within about 20-30 yard of where we were set up (which was outside) and the CB radios came through the system a few times. Finally, we had ants get all over the gear, which was no big deal, just kind of distracting. We did 5 20-30 second outros, and 1 full song toward the end, where I was finally able to relax and get some good slide licks in. It was pretty labor intensive, and way early for playing live & loud, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'll see if we got any decent video, and put it on the web if its cool.

grace & peace & cool tones,
Randy

Getting a few good licks in is all that matters in the end.
Well done.
Breaka-Breaka, get offa my channel!

(Hey, watch out for ants. I seen them short out a PA system once at an Angels party I was playing at; blue and green smoke everywhere).

Yeah, I got some good ones on there with the last song.
They were fading the show toward the end, so the Fox 13 logo was showing for a few seconds in the middle of the tune, but it sounded pretty good. Maybe I can get the video online.

Yep, we had a ton of ants.
We also had a big praying mantis get on Andy's drums. Thought it was a sign from God

You never can tell what you're going to walk into with a live gig, especially one that's outside...

sounds like fun randy_mc, apart from the ants in your amps.

I've got a rare gig this afternoon. My friend and great country picker Mick Martin asked me to sit in with his band the Smokin Crawdads at the 'Ekka', which is Brisbane's yearly expo (ekka is strine for expo ... 'strine' is strine for 'Australian'). It should be a hoot: junk food, throngs of people to watch, human cannon balls, cowboys and cowgirls, general mayhem puctuated by 4 sets of ripping country music. I do another Friday night. I play live so rarely these days that when a gig does come up, I really love it.

I'll report back!

Kirk
