How to Play Slide Guitar in Standard/Dropped-D DVD by Kirk Lorange
If you really want to spice up your playing, slip a slide over your pinkie and add it to your musical vocabulary. There's no need to re-tune your guitar to an open tuning, just stay in standard or lower that bass string down to D. Kirk shows you how in this 70 minute DVD, talking and playing you through the basics, vibrato, muting, playing single note lines, finding all the chord flavors (they're all there!) and mixing it all into one very neat hybrid style of playing guitar. How to recognize cone brands
I have an old unbranded wooden bodied Biscuit type resonator, and I’m thinking of putting a quaterman cone in there, but I’m not sure what cone id in there now, so my question is “are Resonator cones branded” and how would I spot a decent cone like a National or Quaterman?
Thanks
Lissa

I have asked around and have only gotten one reply. It is more important to know what cone is going to fit your reso than the brand. It was suggested you look here for cones to make sure you get a good fit for a replacement. Apparently there is no guaranty that the two cones you mentioned will fit your reso. I will keep my ear to the ground for you
good luck

National cones have a ribbed spiral around them.
Dobro biscuit cones are plain.
They both have different tones.
I prefer the tone of the "spiral" cone.
I'd rather a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

I just read that there is really no way to tell other than in general like lightninboy said. There are lots of people now making both styles. Go listen to a national if the cone you have is spiral. The national will blow it away if it is a copy.

Thanks guys, I posted the same question on the alt.music.guitar.resonator newsgroup and got a few replies there as well. I think basically that there is no way to be sure just by looking at it, as there are no brand marks and there are many made in china cones that look just like the better quality units.
