How to Play Slide Guitar in Standard/Dropped-D DVD by Kirk Lorange

If you really want to spice up your playing, slip a slide over your pinkie and add it to your musical vocabulary. There's no need to re-tune your guitar to an open tuning, just stay in standard or lower that bass string down to D. Kirk shows you how in this 70 minute DVD, talking and playing you through the basics, vibrato, muting, playing single note lines, finding all the chord flavors (they're all there!) and mixing it all into one very neat hybrid style of playing guitar. thanks frankenstrat2. The closest they have is 12-54. I have since found www.slidingdelta.com. I can buy john peirce strings seperately to match the guages I want. Costs a lot more but it gets it done.
thanks

I buy 12-54s and then buy single 14s for the high E.
Be prepared to snap some middle strings if you tune up to open A.
No problem for drop D though.
Fat strings= Big tone.

I finally got the 16s and 18s on. To my surprise, it looks like I am going to have to lower the action. I already had my guitar set up for both slide and finger but, those two top strings pulled them up past the comfort point. I know your supposed to adjust the truss rod as well as string hight but the neck looks pretty good so I am just going to try lowering the strings instead.

16's? 18's? Holy crap, you must have to roll those off the back of a cable truck.

What is the advantage to using such chunky strings?

I have a friend that likes cables, too. He buys 7-string sets and just puts the high 7th string aside to give/sell to other players. Leaves him with a 14 set...guess not even in the league that you guys are talking about.

I don't know....seems it would be prudent to adjust your truss rod for strings that heavy.

I think my guitar guy will have to set it up again. You won't believe the tone you get from those heavy strings. Thick and rich. I would never go back after hearing that tone. Tone is king.

Have any here tried the Newtone 'Michael Messer' Resonator and Electric Classics? Excellent strings, and pretty much the 'standard fitment' over here in the U.K. If you check out Michael's site Marty, www.michaelmesser.co.uk he has a Canadian dealer listed (12th fret music?).
And in answer to your previous question on an earlier thread - the 'dropped D' glass slides WILL be added to our website in the next couple of months - same price as our 'Ultimate' lead crystal slides ($40.00 U.S.), with all the same color & style combinations as 'Ultimate's...Thanks for asking

Slide On.

Ian.

What strings do you like for acoustic

I just picked up a few sets of John Pearce Slack Key stings, 13-56. Without mixing and matching, what brands/models do you all like for acoustic for that "fat" sound.

Thanks

  Snake Oil Strings

You will hate this.
I only and exclusivly use custom sets of strings made up for me by my friend and string mentor, Dean Farley of Snake Oil Brand (S.O.B.) Strings. Dean was formerly the owner of famed Scalar strings, and used to write a column on strings, their alchemy and construction for Vintage Guitar Magazine. There is probably no one one the planet more knowledgable about guitar strings, their fact and fantasy. Dean just re-entered the string business after an absence of nearly 10 years for health and personal reasons.
He sells world-wide, direct to the public.
His strings cost more.
The trade off is they sound better, feel better, and last longer. He is the most accomodating merchant you will ever encounter in terms of making up sets in gauges that will work for your needs and your style and instrument. His quality control and materials are unmatched.
Have I raved enough?
His website is still under construction.
You can reach Dean by e-mail at this address.
Tell him Frankenstrat sent you.

  JP Slack Key

I replaced my John Pearce PB lights with the JP slack key set last night. Basically this set adds some beefier strings to the 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 stings than standard sets. Tuned to open D these gauges sound quite a bit better to my humble ears.

Just thought I'd share. Back to playing now....
