How to Play Slide Guitar in Standard/Dropped-D DVD by Kirk Lorange
If you really want to spice up your playing, slip a slide over your pinkie and add it to your musical vocabulary. There's no need to re-tune your guitar to an open tuning, just stay in standard or lower that bass string down to D. Kirk shows you how in this 70 minute DVD, talking and playing you through the basics, vibrato, muting, playing single note lines, finding all the chord flavors (they're all there!) and mixing it all into one very neat hybrid style of playing guitar. I'm not sure what it is Toxer ... I do use an overdriven sound, usually through a Boss Overdrive; if I use my Digitech RP100, I choose an overdriven sound. The heavy strings no doubt add to the bottom end ... I dig into the strings quite forcibly sometimes. Perhaps the action you ask about is something to do with the vibrato I use, which actually generates a note without any picking if I want it to. Maybe the bottom end, over-driven shimmer is what you're talking about ...
Not much help, huh?

and another question - are there any standerts on the size of reso cones? can i replace fendre cone with national one, for example.
i've seen the first resonator guitar recently - fender 50. its sound appeared to be muted and not loud. am i right that in comparison to normal acoustic guitar the reso sound is more clear (metalic) and louder?

I have never played a mim strat but, know a huge number of players that have one or did have one when they started. For the music you want to play that would be your best choice IMO. The review of the tornado was mixed. You won't get the classic strat sound your looking for. I don't know anything about the samic so it would be a matter of playing both, comparing tone, build quality and price.

Hey Toxer,
I played a couple of fender resonators not so long ago. They were all quite disappointing. The tone was dull and certainly not loud for a reso. Kinda sounded like a small body laminate acoustic with a bit of twang. I remember playing a dobro a few days later at another store and boy, there was a world of difference. I also played a few Johnson resos. Don't really remember how they sounded, but I do remember I was not impressed. Hence, I wouldn't recommend either of them. 600 bucks is not bad...think about waiting a few more months, saving a little more and going in for a better guitar. I'd say dobro, but getting that shipped all the way to moscow would probably increase the price by quite a bit. Might want to look into it anyway.
The mexican strats are decent guitars. But for the sake of everyone who listens to you play, yourself included, please don't use anything lower than .10 gauge strings. .09s sound like a silk thong stretched over a cigar box. .11s would be best, but your gonna have to get the store to set them up to whatever gauge you choose.
Never played a tornado.
If the barret series are the samick archtops (jazz guitars), then those things sound pretty good for the price. i've played the la salle or something like that. Nice tone...acoustic as well as plugged in. If you plan on sliding on it, use roundwounds. Lots of stores put flatwounds on them.
My 2 cents.

that barret was not an archtop but solid-body guitar. and it seems like it costs too low for a name series. just a guess...
and tornado (hamp\single\hamp) has more pressed and thick sound...i think more jazzy one. but a strat is mora strait abd better suits for blues...a rhetorical question) to be or not to be..
than maybe the final question - does chinease and mexican febder guitars differ greatly? - i haven't asked where tornado was built.

There is a world of difference between the Chinese/Korean and Mexican strats. The Chinese/Korean ones are terrible. I don't know whats wrong with fender these days. Cort and Yamaha make some pretty decent guitars in korea...others too i'm sure.
However, try them all...thats the ultimate test. If you like the sound and feel of one better than the other, well you have your choice. If your not too experienced with guitars, have an experienced guitarist take a look at them (preferably someone who plays the same type of music you do, and someone whose playing you really dig).
As far as what guitar is better suited to the blues or any other genre, well there is no answer to that. I like the thick warm sound of a humbucker. Some like the sound of the single coil. However, when it comes to slide playing, a single coil at the bridge position has a nice bitey tone to it. I guess you could call it a "bitey twang" for lack of a better expression. Don't let that be the only reason you buy a guitar. I have a Japanese gibson SG remake with alnico humbuckers and it sounds fantastic with a slide.

Toxer,
I have played a Mexican Strat, (underlay underlay, aye curamba!), and they are very good.
Lots of things are made in Mexico because of the cheaper labour costs, (like Shure microphones), and the componants are usually as good as a USA Strat.
Mexicans have better P/ups than Chinese, and are a better guitar all round, but you only get what you pay for.
If you can afford the MIM strat, it would be the best choice,IMO.
Try to find a light weight one, the heavy ones don't sound as good.
Also, sight down the neck and make sure its straight.
And, ask for a discount! Start at 20%, and if they don't go for that, try 10%.
(Tell them you cant afford the full price, but you want that guitar real bad).
I'd rather a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

mim=made in mexico, mia= made in america, mij= made in japan etc. Common way to refer to strats. Gives you a rough idea of quality of build. Congrats on your new axe. Pics and clips?
