Member Introductions

Some of us started to get to know each other on another thread. I realized that most of the other Forums I belong to have a section for introductions. Usually the moderators and senior members will chime in and say hello and welcome the Newbies.
Over here, it seems we are all newbies.
So I'll take a shot at putting up a post where the few of us who hang out here can get better acquainted.
********************
My name is Barry.
I'm a slide-aholic. I can't ever seem to get enough. I used to be happy just with regular guitars, acoustics, electrics, 12-strings. I always liked to listen to slide players, and marveled at their singing. vocal quality compared to regular fretted playing.
I'm 53 years old and have played guitar most of my life. In my teens and twenties I always played in local bands.
Growing up and living on Long Island in the shadow of New York City I have had the great advantage of being able to attend many shows and to have seen almost every guitar hero and great band live at some point in their carreers.
I quit playing music as a business in my twenties, and 'retired' for more than ten years. Later on my wife insisted that I start to play again, for fun as a hobby.
Of course hobbies become obsessions.
I always loved Ry Cooder and traditional acoustic/electric blues/rock guitar. The Allman Bros and Southern Rock always appealed to me, as did the California sound of the Eagles, and of course all of the British Invasion groups- Beatles and Stones. Each of those genres featured a fair amount of slide guitar.
Somebody remind me to go back to the 50 Greatest thread and post George Harrison and Joe Walsh.
In my rebirth as a hobbyist guitar enthusiast I began to teach myself some slide. Warren Haynes emerged as a modern slide hero and I tought myself to slide on the electric guitar in natural tuning as Warren often does. I had played a fair amount of acoustic guitar during my 'sensitive singer-songwriter days' so I was also familiar with open G and drop D tunings and the various fingering possibilities.
Over time my slide abilities progressed (slowly) and at the same time I began to network with other players such as myself with careers and families. I began to accumulate guitars and amps and a small PA- all gear I bought second-hand, over time.
At this point I have a home studio in basement. I am fortunate to have built up a rotating group of musicians who come over regularly to play music.
We have a great time, there is no pressure, no equipment to move, no cigarette smoke, no 3rd set to play, no bar owners telling us to turn down or drunks making requests.
I am always trying to improve, reading practicing and playing. I have made friends all over the world thanks to Internet Forums such as this and others.
While I am far from a virtuoso slide player, I'm proud of what I have accomplished so far. I really enjoy the music, and as you guys probably realize, we slide guitar players have our own niche, which few regular players fully understand, but is universally admired.
Oh- my screen name refers to my two main guitars- both made from parts of various vintage stratocasters, but customized for my needs as a slide guy.
Thus Frankenstrat2.
But enough about me.....

  Yet another new slider!

Hey Folks, I was lurking and figgered I'd register and join the fray! here's some quick info on me.

Been playing Classic Rock,Blues, Punk as well as a year long stint in a 30 piece swing band. altogether, roughly 25 years of playing. In the past year and a half, my job has made it impossible to continue with my rock band, Hadda quit, but the upshot of this is I can take my guitar to work, but because of my isolation, my style is evolving towards more self-sufficient styles of playing.

I've got very good gear, which I'll list at the end, but I've been practicing slide on a 1966 Harmony Archtop, with a P-90 which I installed. In addition to slide I'm also getting into ragtime fingerpicking, Rev Gary Davis being the main inspiration, whom I discovered thru Jorma Kaukonen and Hot Tuna.

I think maybe I need to focus on one style at a time, but I love' em both.
I've always been a big blues fan, and of course, I cut my teeth on the Big Three from Britain, Page, Beck and Clapton. but These "oddball" styles really do something for me. I've really gotten into Son House, Furry Lewis and Bukka White! Ya know, I'm 40 years old , been playing quite awhile, Is this a mid-life crisis or am I just stupid and all this great music managed to get under my radar all these years?

Hope to make some friends here, also hope to learn things as well.
In the spirit of openess, I offer a confession of sorts. Although I know Stevie Ray Vaughn was a very talented player, and I enjoyed a lot of his music, I don't worship him, like all the players in my town do, I have never wanted to play or sound like him, and I think he really made a career out of impersonating Johnny Winter. There,... I said it and I meant it! ....Here's my Gear in no real order-

2004 Gibson SG Special
2004 Les Paul Double Cut Faded w/P-90s
2004 Fender Stratocaster-American-Sunburst
Marshall DSL50Head w 2-12 1936 Cab
1966 Blackface Super Reverb
Vox Valvetronix 50 watt modeling amp
1966 Harmony HD1215 Archtop w/p-90
1997 Epiphone Dot Archtop-Heritage Cherry Sunburst
1999 Epiphone Les Paul Specialw/p-90s
Homemade Pedalboard-Boss noise suppressor-Boss compressor-Boss EQ-20 EQ-Fulltone OCD overdrive-Boss Chorus> AMP

Hi CJ,
welcome to the forum.
I'm a fan of Curly Howard too, the guy cracks me up.

Hello,
I was on Kirk's webring a few years back and I have just found this site.

My name is Lovat, 47 and stay in central Scotland.
I was playing fairly frequently in several blues duos over the last 15 years but lugging pa's around has lost it's glamour.

So I play less bars and festivals and have looked to concentrate on my picking and sliding and keep trying to complete my fourth cd " Original snake sin music".

This will have slidey tunes on it and some of my own fingerstyle to.I call it Scottish music because Celtic music I fear is a media creation.

I got into sliding on electrics in the mid 70's as the Kay I bought was unplayable in any other way.
I now play my trust Suzuki for slide which I bought in 1979 and a Yari I bought in 2001 for fingerstyle.

I am inspired by Ry Cooder,Fred McDowell and the wonderous Robert Johnson.

adios,
Houndog

...play it..I just hit the damn thing ...

Hounddog,
I checked it out and it gave me a 404 too.
Odd, cause it used to work.
I retyped it and now it seems to be working.
(If it doesn't work for you, try it through the BRB forum, I know that works.)
Let me know what you think.
I'll check your stuff out too, looking forward to hearing ya'.
Stay cool,
LB.

Grand LB,
I got into your Soundclick page, I do like the R+T track it has a real original feel to it . Doug and I play it at a similar speed, your rolls are very good.

I like the timing on FBB , it is something I do admire in players ...how to put feeling into the tune without losing the timing.

Post some more !

adios,
Lovat

That was interesting to read through this old thread - AT and the guys talking about how "quiet" it was here at that time, nobody ever around, etc. Now here we sit with almost 40,000 members and a very active board - how quickly things change!

BTW - Welcome, Pinkstrat!
