  Where's The Music

This guys got great technique I guess! Musically, dead from the neck up in my opinion. I don't understand why so many players think that speed ( I think they call it shredding) is the most important part of there playing. Maybe I'm the one who is dead from the neck up, but I would rather listen to Kirk's slide rendition of Auld Lang Syne anyday. I think it's called playing with some feeling. I just don't think that technique is more important than the music. Just my opinion. Don C.

The first time I saw the Larrivee clip (about 2 years ago now), I was so depressed I couldn't pick my own Larrivee up for about a week. It was one of those moments where you realize that you will never be able to push your instrument to its limits and reach its full capability and maybe it would be better to sell it to someone who could. Then I regained my sanity.

  Michael Hedges and Aerial Boundaries

Has anyone heard of Michael Hedges? He is considered to be one of the defining, if not the defining, player of the slap and tap style of guitar playing. He has the perfect blend of percussion and melody....As Goldielocks would say, "...just right." His Aerial Boundaries is considered to be the epitome of that style. Check out his techniques. Michael does things with the guitar that, well you have to see. All I can say is that when I first saw him perform, (DVD), I was flabbergasted, my mouth fell open in utter amazement and even now when I see his videos, I still am blown away. I have only seen Michael Hedeges perform on video because he was killed in a car accident.

Here are links to some of his videos. The first link contains amazing performances from the Windham Hill concert DVD. His set includes a performance of Aerial Boundaries as well as Michael playing the harp-guitar (Because it's there). Included on this site are links to information about Micaheael Hedges. The second link contains a video of Michael performing Aerial Boundaries in what seems to be a garden.

I had a friend of mine show me some of those clips- I was the same way. A shame that so many of the great talents in music died so young. Imagine what Mozart could have done with another 30 years or so. Or Hendrix, SRV, etc.

Ever wonder what Mozart (or Bach or any of the great classical composers) would be playing and composing if he were born today? Hmmmmm.

Good question!! given our remarkable improvements in technology and knowledge. I am sure that they would have done something far greater than anything we can imagine.

I agree with you, amazing does not come close to capturing what/who Michael Hedges does/is. Here is the evidence that words can be limiting. There is a true story that Will Ackerman (founder of the Windham Hill Music label and a premier fingerstyle guitarist) was bribed to go and see Michael Hedges play. He did and after the first song was played, Will wrote up a contract on a napkin. Its very interesting that Michael Hedges style of playing is still undefined. Even Michael couldn't describe it, he called so many things....acoustic thrash, heavy mental... Thanks for the tab offering, but I'm not that advance yet. I'm still learning the basics.

Have fun .

Vee
