How to Play Slide Guitar in Standard/Dropped-D DVD by Kirk Lorange

If you really want to spice up your playing, slip a slide over your pinkie and add it to your musical vocabulary. There's no need to re-tune your guitar to an open tuning, just stay in standard or lower that bass string down to D. Kirk shows you how in this 70 minute DVD, talking and playing you through the basics, vibrato, muting, playing single note lines, finding all the chord flavors (they're all there!) and mixing it all into one very neat hybrid style of playing guitar. Well at least there are a few of us here.
I just saw Bob Brozman live at the BB King Club NYC on a bill with Sonny Landreth and the Campbell Brothers. Quite a slidefest.
Brozman in a very strong solo artist. Different than anything I've ever seen.
My pal Kirby Kelly from Texas is another guy you certainly want to check out as a solo artist. In the summer months he sometimes gets booked as an opening act at festivals, usually in the Southwest.

As sliders go for the list here- I would add
Danny Gatton since he could do stuff with a Bud bottle that few could do with a bottleneck.
Wally Gator in Houston is another one with that unique ability.

Wow- look at us!
An actual conversation that went into two pages.
Might as well hi-jack the thread just to keep the conversation going.
So what do you you guys play- solo, or in bands, acoustic or electric? Traditional or modern? Instruments?

Anyone else is free to keep posting slide players of note- just killing time here and bumping the thread.

more sliders to consider...frank hutchinson, blind willie mctell, sylvester weaver, tampa red, etc, etc,,,one could just go on and on...

I am just a duffer. my nick says it all. I used to play a lot of the delta guys. If I played live , you would have to nail everything down so I wouldn't be killed by flying chairs and bottles. I love the blues in all its forms, I wish i had the skills to do something with it. I am hoping Kirks' book will at least get me to the point where I can play for friends. I picked up a 1921 artist lap steel for 100 bucks. I'm taking it to my tech guy to see if he can slap a usable fretboard on it. Wish me luck. I already have a cheap electric with mutant pickups I use for slide as well as a srv special ed strat and my regular accustic. What are you playing on? So how come you guys have'nt uploaded your jams to those bts here?

You know guys, I really do hate hi-jacking threads, even on a board where we might be the only three semi-regulars other than Kirk.
So here's an idea:

Savoy Brown (was it Kim Simmons?)
and
Blackfoot (what was his name?)
and what about the Nashville guys, dobro players, etc.
Jerry Douglas anyone?

This is my first post here so I'd like to say hi to everyone.
My favourite top 5 would be:

Ry Cooder
Kirk Lorange
Roy Rogers
Johnny Winter
Blind Willie Johnson.

Its hard to keep it at only 5, but these guy's are all monster players.
P.S. great site.

I'd rather a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Wow, there are at least several on this list that I haven't heard of. Since I like the ones that are listed which I have heard, I know I will need to check these other guys out. (though I'm surprised that it took so long to get Johnny Winter on that list)

I'll just add some names which I haven't seen here yet. Not my very top guys neccessarily (who may already have been listed in this thread) but should be known by sliders:

Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt
Hard blues rock -- Captian Beyond and Iron Butterfly, Metamorphosis album. He was in Dickey Betts pre Allman Bros. Band group which I think was called The Second Coming. You can hear that southern style, but very hard.

Sister Rosettta Tharp

Bill Harkleroad aka Zoot Horn Rollo
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band classic line up from Trout Mask Replica and Clearspot. Delta/Chicago blues via Stravinsky and Ornette Coleman.

Jeremy Spencer
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. A great mimic of many classic blues players; especially Elmore James.

Quicksilver Messanger Service (was it John Clipollina or the other guy?) I've always thought these guys (and other 60s SF guys) might have been the link between Elmore James playing and the almost unprecedented slide of long extended jams of the Allmans.

Reverand Gary Davis
(I hope that's the guy I'm thinking of)

Barbecue Bob
(again, I hope that's the guy I'm thinking of)

Leslie West
Mountain. He rarely plays slide but his version of Crossroader from the live album "The Road Goes Ever On" is pretty nasty.

Michael Bloomfield
Such a great player overall, I think his slide work is often overlooked.

Mick Taylor
I really love his slide with The Stones, like "All Down the Line" and "Love in Vain" but he is great on the Mayall 70th Birthday Concert DVD

I'll think of a few more later.

Here's another guy to add -- Eric Sardinas. If you haven't heard of him, he plays a resonator throught a high gain Rivera amp. Worth checking out.

To finish my list, Sonny Landreth, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, and Ry Cooder.
