slimy thumb action

Hey guys, Ive been practicing on a daily basis now for a few weeks and I'm practicing chords and transitioning between them. I'm finding it a bit difficult to make the transitions clean and in time because (I think) my fretting hand thumb is sliding all around on the guitar neck when I try to use it as an anchor. I don't think I have unusually moist hands or anything. I'm practicing on an Ovation Celebrity with medium steel strings. The finish on the neck is very smooth. It also has a pretty sharp radius. If I place my thumb on center, it seems the neck has a tendency to get away from me when I take my fingers from the fretboard. If I bring the neck down into my palm, leaving my thumb hanging over the top of the fretboard, I have a bit more control of the guitar but it's still no good because I have problems with finger position. I was wondering what the heck is going on, this problem seems to be compromising my progress. Should I use some surfwax or some hairspray or something to help that thumb stay anchored where I place it? Have any of you guys heard of this as being a problem or am I just being a big baby?
