Artists who have a "trademark tone" (Santana, EVH, etc.) will sound a lot the same no matter what guitar they're playing or what amp they're playing through. If you want to nail the sound of a particular artist, study their playing closely....learn their phrasing and their style and practice it. Without that, no guitar, amp or effects will get you what you're looking for.

Very true!
Just take Eric Clapton for example!
He can play his Stratocaster and still sound like he's playing his 335.
Tone is in the fingers, or at least part of it is anyway!
