Don't forget that a lot of the tone is in the fingers. Artists who have a "trademark tone" (Santana, EVH, etc.) will sound a lot the same no matter what guitar they're playing or what amp they're playing through. If you want to nail the sound of a particular artist, study their playing closely....learn their phrasing and their style and practice it. Without that, no guitar, amp or effects will get you what you're looking for.
