Get your basics down. You need to be comfortable with bar chords. You need to be able to play a couple of tunes and feel somewhat comfortable playing in various positions on the neck. When you can do all that then buy Kirks' materials on
Plane Talk and it will teach you how to improv as well as knowing the fretboard like the back of your hand among many other things. Take your time here. If you get into P.T. before you have your basics down, it can be very frustrating.
