If I'm holding a long note, I tend to start slow and wide and finish fater and narrower. I imagine I'm drawing a circle on the string with my
slide, so it's not so much a back and forth motion as a circular motion. I find that it keeps generating the note, as there is a up-down component to the circle which acts like a violin bow on the strings.
