Ok, I'm going to upgrade to the newer version of Firefox. I guess the reason it was working for me was because I was using version 1.0.4... damn I hate when a browser gets updated and makes things NOT work... it's supposed to be the other way around ... I'm determined to get to the bottom of this, so bear with me.

Indeed I noticed this from the very beginning, sorry that I didn't mention it earlier Clancy . Unfortunately standards are something that browsers know nothing about. The <embed> tag is necessary in order to display plugins in firefox, while explorer uses parameter names. I don't fuss about these things too much as I prefer to download the media file before I view it anyway.
Personally I sometimes look at my CSS files and are disgusted. I have more hacks there then in my Java and C++ programs. But it looks like we need to work around the browsers, as they wont get their act together any time soon.

toxcity,
I am kind of getting somewhere with this... where I'm not sure, but somewhere - I actually had it all working in Firefox (the new version, netscape and IE) but then booted up my old iMac and tried it on there and it crashed both Safari and Firefox on the mac, so I'm back to square one... well not quite, I have another idea I'm trying now.
Thanks for everyones help and patience with this. We'll get it worked out.

Np...
If you need any help don't hesitate to post any problems you might encounter. We are perhaps here to learn how to play the guitar, but many of us can give back to this community in other ways too.

I also have this problem. I thought it was a plugin issue. If you type about: plugins (no space after the colon...I got a smilie face without the space!) into firefox's address bar you get a list of plugins installed. Windows media is not one of them...
I am still researching this one.

I think your issue might be different; Does your browser at least render the page correctly, that is do you see a rectangular object in the top left hand side of the page when you load the lessons. If you do then your problem is related to the plugin itself, otherwise its the issue with the page not rendering properly for firefox browsers.

Thanks toxicity, I might just take you up on that offer one of these days. I see in your profile you're a computer geek too .... I think I have the problem worked out actually. It was much simpler than I thought. I'll look at it again in the morning. I just have one more issue to work out with it and then it should be all set to go.
Mike, I think toxicity is right, Yours sounds more like a plugin issue. I'll let you know how to fix that tomorrow too. I think I know what that problem is... but I'm tired tonight... going to get caught up on some sleep.

Yea..I installed the plugin and the page renders but I don't have a place holder for the video...
I have a brand new Dell laptop and I am trying to get it configured the way I like it so trying to find solutions takes some time...
Thanks

Congrats Clancy. I see you got working in FireFox without using the <embed> tag. Unfortunately I didn't save a copy of the old web page to see what you did, but at least it now works.
Good job!!

LOL, well I don't know how that happened Larry, I haven't even changed anything here on the live forum yet... but I am glad it's working for you
You were right by the way (which I'm sure you already knew) I did need the embed tag for it to work on all browsers (on all platforms), but it wasn't as simple as just adding it into the code I had already. I've been trying it out on my testing server and I seem to have it working on all browsers now (even on the mac...whoo hoo). I just need to find a way to stop Firefox from wanting to autostart the movie, even though the code is set to false... actually just thought of an idea of how I might be able to fix that...
--------------------------------------------------
Mike,
Glad you got the plugin error sorted out. Don't worry about the movie not showing, that's just the problem that we're talking about here and I should have it fixed later on today hopefully.
Cheers and thanks for everyone's input. It's been a big help.

Ok, I think I have it working now. You should now see the movie embedded in the lesson pages.
I've tested it in Firefox 1.0.4 and 1.0.7, IE 6, Netscape 8.0.4 and it works for me - also I have tested it on Firefox 1.0.7 for mac and Safari 1.0.3 - I know the Safari version is old (I have mac OS X version 10.2.8 running so I can't upgrade to a newer version of Safari to test it)... anyone using Safari (a newer version) might like to confirm that it's working on that too.
If it's not working for you, please post here in this thread and let me know the browser version you are using.
Also, please let me know if there are any other bugs you notice with the forum... I missed this one completely because I was using an older version of Firefox.
Thanks
Clancy

Hi Clancy,
I just checked a couple of the lessons and the videos are appearing. Of course they started appearing for me earlier before you made the change. That has me completely baffled as to why they just started working today.
Again, congrats and great job.

Thanks Larry, that had me baffled too...still can't work that one out... anyway, thanks for letting me know about the missing embed tag. That helped in finding the solution.

Sorry, my browser must be retarded... It still doesn't show up, but it's better, as you can see the box where the video is supposed to be (it didn't before). But the video itself doesn't show up.
Attached is an example of what it looks like.

Hey feeman,
That doesn't sound better to me... a box where the video should be, that's even more of a tease ... I'm kind of stumped as to why it's not working for you. I have the same version of Firefox now, so does allthumbs and he sees it and at the moment toxicity is checking to see if it works for him.
So, two questions for you.
Do you know of a site that has an embedded WMV file that you can see? If you do, post it here and I'll go and look at the source code... and also what operating system are you on?
