Depends on the music your interested in. The finger discomfort of playing on steel strings is fairly short term. Don't base your decision on a long term purchase around a short term disadvantage. Nylons are quieter so that is an advantage if your living in a dorm. On the other hand your more likely to meet more steel string players in college than nylon if your the social type. It is more difficult to find a decent nylon at a reasonable price than a steel. Think carefully and weigh all the factors.
