At least IMO it is better to buy one effect at a time and see how it works in your effects chain. Most, not all, MultiFX boards do lots of things but not anyone of them better than a FX pedal that was designed for one purpose only. I use to own a MultiFX board and it was a fun 'toy' but I eventually sold it.
I have a friend who plays with his very expensive Multi-FX system (rack mounted, MIDI controlled thing) more than he does with his guitar to get the 'right tone'.
Tried to tell him "play the guitar more - the tone will come'....
