Flat picking you have to be like faster on the strings... with the fingers it makes things a little easier to control because you don't have to shift the pic to the other strings, because your fingers are alrdy there.

I find myself lately having to put down the pic, just so I can make something sound right.

The way I've found to build up speed with the pic is just to play a chord and pick the strings alternating the 6th and 5th string and only playing the lower 3. Over and Over again. I know its repetetive, but you gotta do it.

Another way I sometimes do the pic thing by combo'ing with the fingers also, I use the pic to play the bass lines, and the fingers to play the lower strings. I still hold the pic with the index and thumb, so you basically shift to using.. middle, ring, and pinky in place of the normal fingerstyle without a pic.
