Someone's gonna blast me for this but here's what I did way back when...
Find a nice slow 4-4 ballad that you like. Concern yourself only with the beginning of the song. Try to find a chord that fits. That will most likely be the key for that song. When you find it, it will be the sweetest sound you ever heard because it'll be you making it. The rest is gonna be fairly easy. Fiddle around with the various chords that fit the key you're now in. Don't over concern yourself with 7ths, minors and such. Most of those ballads are simple 1-3 5 songs. Once you have the basics down, the rest is the fun stuff. Noodle around and you'll see what I mean. Keep flipping back to Kirk's lessons to get an idea of what's to follow.
Now have fun and enjoy yourself. That's why they call it playing.
