actually a beginner may want to consider open tunnings like open D and open G. the reason i say that is because at first when learning the guitar one is required to not only finger the chords with one hand but to provide the rhythm with the other. that can be a rather daunting task. given that it's difficult and not very rewarding, as far as providing anything that sounds muscical, a student can often times get discouraged. there could be something said for the use of open chords where the fingering of chords is either not required or very simple. the same goes with melody, simply fingering a simple scale on one string. one can come up with very musical sounding rhythms that provides a sense of success and less frustration. it also allows the development of struming techniques without the focus on chord fingering. I IV V progressions are very simple chords to make in open tunning. even one chord drones with very simple one string scales are rather simple to perform. just a thought
