How long Did You stay with your first guitar?
Just curious to all the players out there--
How long did you play that first guitar you bought, before you upgraded??
(I was gonna make this a poll, but I haven't had enough coffee yet, so I'd probably bungle it!)

About a year and a half. It was ugly! I've mentioned it before; that you couldn't make a barre chord without a pair of vice-grips at hand. It was old and used when I got it (don't even remember from where or from whom), and I don't think it even had a brand name. Didn't know anything about guitars and there were no players in my small town back in the mid 50s, but I was desperate to learn. All 3 chords! During my first year in college I gave it to my roomie, who tuned it by ear and played it as a steel guitar with a lighter!
The next year (57) I bought a used Stella for $12 from the music store, and had it until I gave it away to a relative in the early 80s and got a very nice Martin nylon. Lost it in a hock shop (well, times were tough in the late 80s!). Then I got my Peavy Firenza in the late 90s. It still looks like new, suits me well, and I probably will keep it forever. Over the last few years I've also acquired an old Samick (my battle-axe) and a pretty nice Washburn acoustic that hardly ever sees the light of ceiling any more.

I moved on from my Epiphone LP Special II after about two years. About two years after the second guitar I moved on to a respectable Epiphone Les Paul Standard and it's kinda snowballed since then.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
