New Guy, Trying to learn

Howdy all, thought I'd drop a quick introduction to let y'all know a bit about me, and why I'm here.

Obviously I'm here for guitars, I'm trying to learn how to play the instrument. My father passed away when I was in my mid-teens, but I remember him playing the guitar when I was younger, and it always sounded great. Well now that I'm an adult (or somewhat.. heh, still a kid at heart of course), I've had that voice in the back of my head.

Well a month ago I went home and found my father's old acoustic guitar in the attic. With the help of a friend (who knows what he is doing) I have restrung it, tuned it, and am trying to learn how to play (my fingertips are already sore and it almost hurts to type this... but I gotta question)

The guitar is a unknown year Aria model number 9420

Well, quite often while trying to learn these chords, my 2nd E string (1st) and B string (2nd) give a harsh rattle that sounds like it is coming from the bridge/saddle area.

What I'm wondering is if this guitar is perhaps too old and has lost its ability to be played properly anymore, or if this is a common issue that can be fixed with a trip down to the music store?

Thank you for any help,

Charlie

I loved Kirk's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and would like to get the sheet music for this version. Where can I buy the sheet music?

By the way- CharlieBoy - I see you're from Virginia. Me too - where about's are you?

Sundance
Yes a beautiful rendition of it. It's on this attachment.

Hi sundance. You should really start your own thread in the intro section of the board. Kirk's version is his own. You could just download the lesson chart from his lessons.I will take a quick look and see if I can find a link for you.

Many thanks for the replies. I have to admit that the music looks strange to me as I'm used to reading notes. I guess this is called tabs? Actually it looks like it's self explantory. Are all of Kirk's songs that I have been listening to on the guitarforbeginners home page available? Where should I be looking?
I'm at work and can't wait to get home to pick up my guitar!

Scroll down the main page to Kirk's Lessons. There are around a 100 of them.

Gidday Sundance, welcome. Kirk's lessons have Guitar Pro files attached, if you get yourself a copy of that program it will allow you to display/print and play the music in TAB or standard notation, plus a whole lot of other stuff.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
