Compression will only add punch if you set the attack great enough to add the punch. If your attack times are too fast, you'll reduce punch. Then again, I'm not even sure what "punch" means when it comes to a bass.

I've recorded over 700 songs now and not once have I needed to boost the bass at 80Hz, for whatever that is worth.

Btw, my definition of "boxy" is more like 400-600Hz. But that's just a personal thing I guess.
