er.. wow?!

I was reading some tablature on the inside cover of a songwriting notebook, and there were like little example things, like hammer-on, pull-off, slide, harmonic and wow.
what is this wow? the notation was an 8 with an arrow pointing up on the second string line. I know I'm clueless, but I had to ask, I'm sorry if the questions been asked before.

many thanks.

For me, I would sing WOW..but I don't think that is the explanation *laughs*

I tried the Google route, but all I get is "Wow! That is awesome", and the likes. Now I am curious as well

the notation or the "tab" had an 8 with an arrow pointing up?

if its tab, its probably a bend

if its notation, its probably indicating, play as written but an octave higher

^^ Yeah. it says wow, like it's supposed to be something like it's being classified as "harmonic" or "slide"

some info on said music notebook, incase anyone has it or something, and know about this wow thing. The book is the "Complete Guitar player Music Writing book" compiled by Russ Shrimpton. I love the books, because they are retro with a cool 70's era type guitar-practice-scenario thing going on the cover. It's by Wise publications.

it seems to be some sort of electronic effect

Quote:
Wow and Flutter: - More from the old days of tape machines, turntables etc than the modern, "digital" age. This is when slight variations in the speed of a tape transport, turntable motor etc creates an annoying "wobbly" variation in pitch. Generally, the "wow" part describes the effect created by slower variations in speed over a longer period, whereas "flutter" describes sharper variations over a shorter period of time.

p.s. are you sure its Russ Shrimpton & not Russ Shipton?

i looked in a couple of tab books at the back page. It seems to be unique to his tab. It may stand for a whammy bar bend.

YES! God, I am such a dummy.
I finally unearthed the fourth volume of the Mr.Shipton books, and you were right the first time, it's a bend. I guess it's his way.

and apologies for calling Mr.Shipton "Shrimpton"

and thanks for everyone's help in figuring this out.
