I agree with you about the main stream being comecialised by the MTV's and B-Bop rap labels of the world. Making a big buck nowaday is all about the image and whether you are willing to sell your music as a sex addative... So the Sex comes firts and the music is secondary, just look at the Britneys and Christina of the world.
The music i feel you are missing if the Kirk's, NoCat's, Rockerbob's etc. that is available. They have brilliant lead pieces in their music and best of all it is free on the forum radio... If you are still not convinced about the amount of music out there you can go to soundclick and listen to some of the bands there...
I have accepted the fact that i dont have a mainstream appreciation for music long ago. This has forced me to look for the music I want to listen to... Now I dont listen to Suicide FM any more... I actually cant remember when last I listened to the radio stations over here for the music...

Now that radio and tv are into 3 minute time slots, there just isn't time for long solos. If you can't fit a tune into that time slot, you don't get played so you don't get paid.

I forgot about that AT... That is a very valid reason for the solo disapearing from the mainstream.
I remember when a bunch of friends recorded their first album, the songs were all in the 5 to 9 minute range. The recording engineer told them that the songs wont sell cause they are all too long... They then butchered alot of the instrumentals and movements from the songs right there while recording... The album never sold anyway, cause they broke up before they marketed the CD and there was legal issues involved...
I reckon they should have left the songs as they were, that way the CD would mean a lot more to me and to them...

You have to be a super group to get played past the 3 minute mark and even then after a while they will edit down the tune.
Ah for the golden days of the album format. That really rocked.

I like the DMX channels on satelite... especially the album rock channel. It plays a lot of stuff that you dont hear on the main stream at all. I mean when was the last time anyone ever listened to anything else than the singles from an album?
I reckon the TV people think we have a 3 minute concentration span...

I know Kirk, Rocker bob, and etc... Are excellant players ! If they were'nt would we honestly be here ? I'm mainly talking about my FM radio stations, and how 95% of whats played is effortless trash ! Bands like; Three doors down, Weezer, System of a down, Nickleback, Offspring, and countless others ! I mean these bands are lousy. Sure i can go to a shred station and hear leads galore, but i'm talking about regular rock bands. I'd be ashamed to be in anyone of those candy a** bands ! But then again if i was i'd at least be hammering away with blistering creative passages ! See ya, John

I honestly haven't followed many new bands... I don't know if it's just because I tend to listen to more recorded music, or because nothing new recently has really caught my ear.
I have tickets to see Eric Clapton and his Band in New York City on September 29th - and I'm really excited about that and I know there will be some really good solos there. Robert Cray is opening for him and Derek Trucks is also supposed to be really good on slide - in addition to EC himself. He's 60, but he still know how to play with all his heart and those magical slowhands...!

I know!! It's because of Clapton that I took up the Blues (although I've been a fan of his since he was in the Yardbirds back in the mid 60's, and Cream was one of my favorites). When he gets fired up - which playing with other good players really does to him - he is hard to beat.

Yeah Jim, Eric Clapton is excellant, and a true legendary blues rocker as well . My favorite blues guitarists are: Jimmy Page - SRV - Eric Clapton - Hubert Sumlin - BB King. Good luck with your blues playing, we could always use another blues great ! BYE, John
