I own that particular guitar. Thye resonator and dobro models are pretty good. They get better with an aphex exciter pedal in the signal chain. They dont feedback at high stage volume. There are a lot af advantages. I know a bit about the Line6 stuff. I used to be very involved with the product line, especially the Vetta amps. They will sonn be releasing free software that will interface with the variax guitar for virtual open tunings at the flick of a switch with no latency like with the guitar synths. Different technology. They are pretty smart people over there at Line6. By the way, you can pick up a used Variax500 on Ebay for around $500. Pretty good deal and you can swap out the necks- its a standard 4 bolt-on.
a lot of bang for the buck if you're not too fussy about 100% exact duplication. Some people with better ears than me have complained about the piezo 'quack' carrying over to the electric models. I don't hear it. Killer 335 and Les Paul Models. The electric Sitar is worth the price of admission.
The acoustic models need the help of an exciter and an acoustic guitar amp or good PA, IMO
Much more info on the Line6 LA Users Forum where I used to be a regular until I got bit with the boutique bug.
