  Tuning

Aargh I'm stuggling with getting my guitar/s in tune with Kirk's vids. Reading and playing is fine () in the main, but when I call up Kirk's vid and play along one of us is out of tune...I'm pretty sure it's not Kirk!! So off to the online tuner - back to Kirk's vid ...

Ok, so noticed that Kirk's playing what looks like nylon strung guitar and so try my classical guitar... but first to the online tuner.

Aargh

give a go at tuning by ear to his vid but by now my frustration is taking on epic proportions.

Maybe I should just trade my guitars for a couple of spoons and a comb with a piece of paper.

I think all guitars sound just a bit different but have you considered a hand held chromatic tuner? I use this one and it has not failed me yet! http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ner?sku=215003

I believe tuning by ear takes some time......don't quit yet!!!

BTW IMOHO no one wants to hear you play a comb! LOL

If everything has a point, well then I must have one, too.

It's a bit of a black art for many of us Sano. I assume you have learned a valid method for tuning by ear? Whatever you do, don't give up. If you really find it too frustrating just do as D-Dawn suggests and buy yourself a chromatic tuner, they're pretty cheap. Make sure you use A=440 cycles as your standard.

Cheers Dawn & 737,

Need a new battery for my chromatic tuner...I know I'll use the one from my hearing aid

Hm!! Still having problems with the tuning. I've taken Dawn and 737's collective advice to tune by chromatic tuner - battery bought/hearing aid intact - and ensured that A=440.

I wasn't far away 'cos before all of this hassle I had made use of the online guitar tuner. Same rigmarole...tried a song playing with Kirk's vid and there wasn't any improvement...as in, it was cack! Then I tried playing against a couple of other members' postings of vids etc and played away happily....the guitars were perfectly in tune.

So logically viewing this sorry debacle - Kirk is not out of tune, I'm not out of tune. Is there something I can check with my computer programmes (yeah, I know already I'm not technically minded...but I'm not a technophobe)? I'm not entirely comfortable with the workings of a computer but surely there must be an adjustment to be made given that neither Kirk or myself are out of tune. Do you tweak a doopher, crank a switch?

Good thing out all this escapade is that I finally got round to tuning up the mandolin and let my fingers chase each other around the fretboard for the rest of yesterday evening.

Any advice will be gratefully welcomed.
Iain

Sorry to hear that Sano. The only thing I can think of is that you have a problem with your guitar, in all probability, poor intonation. Unlikely to be the computer program.

Have a look in the techie forum, UGB has a number of stickies in there explaining how to check and set your guitar for correct intonation.

I think you're going to find that Kirk was tuned to a differnt scale than you are--try the drop d-thats one he uses often-or write and ask which tuning that vid was created using.

737 and US,

Thanks for your suggestions. I did have a look at UGB's techie site which has a feature on electric guitar intonation and ways to correct that. But that was for electric rather than acoustic guitar. Nevermind as I enjoyed having a look around in that area - is there no end to information in this forum!!?

Cheers again for your help.
Iain
