Audacity is excellent for a starter program- don't know about Kristal. here's another site with some good information about home recording techniques and understanding some of the process of making it sound as good as possible.

The program will only record what you put into it. So it should sound fine as long as you don't clip while you're recording.
Is the soundtank a type of effects pedal? If so, are you saying that you tried connecting it to the computer before and it sounded bad when you stomped down (was it a wah pedal)?

I think the coolest and easiest thing is toi use a webcam. I got a simple Logitec thing that sits on top of my screen for like $50 It setup supe easy, run the cd and plug it in. It works amazingly well actually and you can post the videos on Putfile or Youtube or myspace. Here's one I did last night...
http://media.putfile.com/BSR-The-Weight
If you con't want use the video you can import the movie into Windows Movie Maker, a program you can find on your computer already. Once it's in the time line you can right click and select it and copy it. Open Audacity and Paste it into there. you can use Audacity to convert the audio portion to an mp3 format and post to soundclick or here.
It's cheap way to do it and the video option is kind of cool...

Yeah I hate to say it also, but I use my logitech webcam as a recording mic also, its cheap easy and doesn't do to bad. Just that converting thing is what sucks, but if you pick up a recording software and still use the mic then its ok.

Gutter, Audacity will work fine with any effects that you have. The most important thing to do is monitor the record level. When recording with Audacity it will display the recorded waveform. Simply make sure that the waveform doesn't peak or max out in the window at any time. Strum your hardest with your loudest FX and adjust the record level to keep the waveform no more than about 80-90% of the window.
And yes you can double up and mix tracks with audacity as well. The following was created by recording the guitar and later going back and recording the vocals. The vocals were also recorded 3 times and mixed at different levels giving a chorus sound to them. So in essence I used Audacity to record 4 times to make this...

I also have a tutorial on setting volume levels in Kristal so that you can make sure you don't clip while recording, which you can check out here.

If you download and install ASIO4ALL you should get rid of that error, and kill any latency problems in one go.
Kristal should select asio4all as your sound interface - go to the asio control panel in preferences and try to get the buffer size down to as near 64 samples as you can without causing pops, clicks etc, then you should be set.
I have a Realtek AC97 onboard this rig, I have tried Kristal and it seemed to run fine,..give it a go and tell us how you get on.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
