You really don't need both. Audacity can do multi-track recording, just like Kristal. But I feel that Kristal is a lot easier to use, and don't take up as much CPU as Audacity once you get above 6 or so tracks with effects. And Kristal is really just a multi track recorder. It don't have any type of editing features built in, thus that is where Audacity comes in.
I use to use Audacity as my wave editor, but now a days I use Soundforge6. It works a lot better with Kristal. With Audacity you would Right click your file in Kristal, select Edit in external editor, edit the file in Audacity, save it, then you would have to import it back into Kristal and line it up. With Soundforge (and Sound Engine Free) after you get done editing you save it, close Soundforge, then in Kristal right click the file you worked on and select Refresh and BAM!, it is edited, and you don't have to mess around with lining it back up.
Kristal is just a great piece of free software IMHO. Even with its quirks it is very usable.
And Jean, have you tried the ASIO4ALL driver for you Soundmax card? And how are you running your signal into it? If your running your mic straight into the card, have you tried turning on the 20db boost setting, and then reducing the volume? Just tossing out some ideas...
