Acoustic Sound Hole Cover Thing ... ??

Was watching the DVD, Concert For George, and noticed these acoustic soundhole covers on Tom Petty's and Paul McCartney's guitars.

They covered the full hole ...... brb .... hmmm.... just watched it again.

Petty is playing a Guild D212 12 string. The sound hole item is black and completely covers the sound hole. It apparently can be adjusted as it looks like it has a lip or groove that fits both on the top and inside the guitar and covers up the rosette around the sound hole.

Anyone got a clue? What's it's purpose?

Les
