For the Rec-Software, I'd advice you to start with AUDACITY. Its free and is very easy to learn (If I could learn it easily, then anyone can

For the Hard-Ware : You can use a Mic if you play an Acoustic, or connect it into the PC, for an electric. You may also want to google for stuff like that and learn. I'm a beginner in Recording myself, but recently I'm learning some new stuff. The people here are great and its all because of them that I'm what I'm today.
