Please, Please Help Me Friends !

Hi All

I have bought the Shure-SM 57 and received it just now (It has costed me all my savings). But to my Horror, it doesnt work .

The store has given me a cable which has a XLR End at one end (for the Mic) and the other end has a Mono-Pin (like a Guitar Cable's end). I tried to connect it as :

Shure-SM57 ---->Pre-Amp----->Line-In of my Computer.

But I dont hear anything .

I then connected it to my Guitar-Amp to check if the Mic was ok, but this too produces no Sound. Even tapping on the Mic's mouth doesn't produce any clicks or sound.
Shure-SM57 ----> Guitar Amp

I dont understand, what is that, which I'm doing worng.

1. Does the Mic need any External Power ??? (But there's is'nt any provision for it)
2. How can I check whether the Mic is Working properly ???

Kindly help me out Guys, I'm every sad and worried. I even feel like crying . Waiting desperately for your help

Regds

Kush

The Behringer mixer is actually a German company. I mean I know it's made in China but perhaps you could find a European vendor with cheaper shipping?

Hi UGB

I know I must be irritating you, and I really am sorry for this, but please suggest me one out of these 3 Mixer-Consoles. They are Indian made and I'll be able to save a lot of money. They have their showroom in my town and it'll be great if One among these Click. Kindly just take a second for me abd see the Tech-Specifications and suggets me one. I request Sir.

SM57 is a moving coil dynamic, so no phantom power required. My first guess would by what JayJay said regarding impedance. A transformer should make this work but a mic preamp would be better.

Yes, on both accounts. However, first things first. While the on-board sound card may not be of studio quality, it should do just fine to start with.

The mixer/console is where to start. I highly reccomend Behringer Products and for the money, this is a great deal. The Behringer EU802.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ers?sku=631238

It allows pretty good volume control, on board effext (very limited), Hi /Mid and Lo range control. Plus panning abilities. Room for two mic's, main outs .... and a few other items.

You will also need some patch cables and adapters to plug into the sound card. Be sure to inquire about the electric power and that it matches the electric power in your house.

..... i'm off to Oz again....... oh sorry 'bout that

Les
Does that Behringer EU802 do the same thing an MBox would do? Because the MBox is $300 and that one is $70.

Of those 3 mixers, NONE has an XLR mic input. Those are more of a DJ type mixer I guess. You'd have to get an in line converter to go from XLR to 1/4" phono. That said, get the smallest one; you don't need 14 channels. You don't even need 8 channels, 2 would be fine, but the smallest they make is 8. Is there another brand/company in India?

Is a "DJ type Mixer" enough for the purpose ??? Actually all my Cables have an XLR end for the Mic and the other en is 1/4" Phono Pin (like that of a Guitar cable). Is this ok ???

There arent any other brand atall, these guys have the Monoply, it seems
There is a chance of getting the Costly Imported ones, but I guess my Budget is all over for now . Will the smallest of these do UGB ?????

The smallest is fine, just get a converter, or a DI box, to go from XLR to 1/4".

I'm 99% sure they need phantom power. You can pick up a phantom power box at pretty much any good music store for about 30ish dollars.

HI Kush
The MBox is a little different - it is a hardware/software package.
A preamp makes a world of difference to the sound.
Another company you could try would be Alto, an Italian company, though I am sure their products would be made in China as well.
I have a lot of good contacts in Australia for gear, but shipping is expensive. If you want to compare prices though let me know, and I will see what I can find for you.
All the best
