Chat room
OK, it's up. Flashchat is the new chat room here on the forum. We've decided to give it a bit of a trial run for a while and see how it goes.
I've just made it available (at this stage) for our most active members. So, if you see a link saying chat in the nav bar, you will be able to access the chat room... you can see who's in the chat room (if you have access) as you will see up the top of most of the forum pages just under the nav bar a box saying "Members currently using Flashchat".
We are starting this out slowly for a couple of reasons, but the main one is to see if it puts too much strain on the server, we don't want the forum running slowly because of the chat room.
The other concern we have in starting a chat room here is that it won't be moderated in the same way the forum is moderated and we don't want things to get out of hand, as has been the problem on other forums, so we're going to test it out to see how that side of it goes too.
Please note, although the chat room may not be moderated at all times, logs are kept of all chats so if there are any complaints, this can be easily looked into and resolved.
What you can do in the chat room.
You can chat to up to 10 other members per room.
You can start your own room and invite other members to join you.
The best way to see how it works is just to log in when you see another member is online in the chat and have a click around and test it out.
I had a test run the other day with jayjay and nocat and it all seemed to be running ok. It had a few bugs but they seem to be sorted out now.
Anyway, it's there to be used by anyone who is interested.

Be careful if someone hands you the key to the executive washroom, they may want you to clean it.

Hello,
my understanding is that the main reason that the chatroom is only allowed to active members was to test it out and make sure it doesnt mess with the bandwidth too much? i am wondering if an irc chat might be a better solution? im not sure if your familiar with these? atleast for me i have several other chats open and i prefer to use an irc client then the webbrowser based chats.
just a thought, it may not be what your going for and you may prefer the active person requirement, although i believe you can password protect the rooms or make them invite only and such which may work in a similiar way, but may be harder to set up as you are somehow using the forum here to work with the chat.

Thanks Jason for your feedback. The original reason we did restrict the chatroom to active users was to see if it was too server intensive. It has worked out to be ok and hasn't slowed the forum down and that was our original concern. The chatroom is set up so that it is integrated into the forum and members do not have to re-login to use the chat. This is the way we wanted it to work and it is working fine at this stage.
Since the forum has grown and since the chatroom is unmoderated, we have decided to limit the chat room to members who have at least spent some time contributing to the forum. We find this helps to keep troublemakers and spammers out of the chatroom. We want to above all avoid any kind of unpleasantness in all areas of the forum and especially in the areas that are unmoderated most of the time such as the chat room.
Cheers
Clancy

This very true! Wouldn't tax your server and has better useability. Been using irc for around three years now with non of the media hyped problems of the chat room world. Fine explanation at last Clancy thankyou. Any questions anyone might have on the subject of irc the forum to ask on is p2pconsortium.com/index.php?act=portal Been on this site since it's inception, top place to ask on!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
