Getting over the hump

Hi Kirk
Just wanted to say thank heavens (and Kirk) for PlaneTalk.
I was a beginner of 1 years playing.
Learnt my chords and a few fancy things. I could play a bit, sing along, and so on.
Then I hit that hump - what to do next?
It was very daunting thinking that I now have to start to seriously get into all those scales and modes (and at my age - 44 - I felt that life's too short).
Then PT came along and not only has my theory knowledge increased without hard work, but I can happily play along to backing tracks and improvise at will.
