How to reset Recording levels when mixing in Reaper?

I'm trying to get a song with several tracks to get each one's max volume without clipping, but once it clips how on earth do you reset the red out of the volume read-out so you know if you've reduced it enough when you play it back again? I try changing the vols up or down and back to what I want, or opening and closing the fx panel, or muting and soloing, or try ignoring it and doing something else for a while, and sometimes when I go back to it, it's reset but sometimes not. It's driving me

And the same for the mixer vol window. GGrrrrr!! Help please, I'm going insane.

Bootsie plugins are simply amazing!

But by far my favorite limiter (including both the free and commercial limiters I've used) is the free plugin Buzzroom BuzMaxi 3. This thing is just awesome and so transparent even when you're hitting it pretty hard.

Also, you don't need to have a limiter on every channel, just on the final master channel. Reaper's mix engine is 32-bit float, which can go above 0dB without clipping. Even if the other tracks appear to "peak" on the individual tracks they won't actually distort the signal. The only time it distorts is when it gets converted back to 16-bit (or 24-bit) and sent out the sound card. Sound cards don't operate at 32-bit, so anything over 0dB will be distorted when you listen to it on your speakers.
