Hi GDRQ, welcome to the Wonderful World of Twanging.
I think if you go back to the main site
http://www.guitarforbeginnerws.com and follow the links in the top orange navigation bar from left to right, you'll be doing the right thing. I think before you even pick the instrument up, you should get some kind of embryonic idea of what music is all about. Don't worry about retaining it all, just get a feel for the environment you are about to find yourself in.
Chords, chords, chords ... chords sort of crystallize music. The more you know about chords, the easier you will find everything else.
When you get to the section on chords, start learning them. There are photos, diagrams and sound files. It will be very uncomfortable for a while -- persevere. Soon enough your fingers will toughen up and your ligaments will stretch. What seems impossible for a while becomes second nature.
Make sure you're perfectly in tune! Get yourself an electronic tuner, they're very cheap these days. Simply strumming a well fingered chord on an in-tune guitar is satisfaction enough. I still get lost in that sound, even after 4.5 decades.
Keep coming back to this site as I can now see, thanks to the stats this new forum spits out, that there is a need for real beginner lessons. I'll get onto it asap.
Bon voyage!
