  String Buzz

Hi, can anybody help me fix my string buzz, I'm not entirely sure what is causing the problem. The guitar is brand new and a vintage V100 (Les Paul style) First noticed buzz playing the 6th string and I believe its hitting the first 3 frets, as its very close to them, and they look scratched. Buzz seems to reduce as you play down the fretboard, disappearing somewhere around the 12th fret. I have tried raising the action, as I thought that was the problem, but even with the strings set as high as they will go I still get buzz on the 6th string, bringing the action back down to where it was I've managed to introduce buzz to the 4th string too... Any ideas? I was thinking it might want some new strings perhaps? or maybe some heavier ones? I've found it I play it really lightly then it doesn't buzz, but surely I shouldn't have to play like that?
Oh, just to add, the distance between the string and the first fret is much smaller than it is at the 12th when the string is open, don't know if thats normal or not?

Any help would be appreciated
