Hallelujah
I found the words on the Internet Monday evening and did a quick recording Tuesday evening. Forgive the clams, each part was a single take. I was anxious to hear it. I love this tune and I'm glad I finally got around to learning it. I'm playing in G, capoed at the third fret, so it's in Bb. It works good here for my voice.

I came to the realisation that some stuff was not to be tinkered with and the results

promptly killed the link... Therefore, the public apology and the "lesson learned" comment.
I have since listened to several versions of Hallelujah, And I must say, with all honesty

I think it is more your take got lost in the shuffle. It is a good idea to start a new thread when you upload a take. I missed your take and now the link is dead. As long as you have the authers permission to tinker with his tune than thats cool. It is better to just get the backtrack and put your own melody over it. Adding to a finished tune is like adding to a finished painting. It can be done but, you have to be very very good to pull it off.

Did or didn't? Well I never said I proof read. Nor do I type very well, which is really weird for someone who spends all day, everyday, in front of one or more computers. I meant you didn't ruin the take, but miss typed. I caught it and went in and changed it right away, but the email must have gone. I think I might have ended up posting again and deleting the first post. I'm very sorry. You must have felt really bad when you read that, and I certainly didn't want that, which is why I fixed it as soon as I saw my mistake. I was listening and typing in a hotel room on a business trip, and then I was in meetings and the flight home the rest of the day, so I just got a chance to check in. That's my trade-off for working at home the rest of the time - I have to go on way too many business trips. It's either that, or get a "real" job. I would have responded sooner if I was able. So it’s official – didn’t!
I also agree with allthumbs regarding nocat’s version. It got lost in the shuffle. I don’t think you were being snubbed, you just got missed.
For me, this tune is one of those rare magic moments. For some unknown reason, this tune just came out good. I downloaded the words one evening and worked out the tune. Musically it’s fairly simple, so I picked up the guitar part and melody quickly. I recorded a scratch take the next night and then this take the night after. It just fell together fast. Perhaps one reason is I found a good key for my voice. Another is I used a very simple guitar arrangement. The biggest reason is probably the song. It just feels so good to sing it. The first couple times I sang through the verses I couldn’t get through them without choking up at the beauty of the song.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty good, but I’m blown away by the flattering comments posted here! Wanting to play along and add tracks is cool and complementary to me. You wouldn’t do that with something you didn’t like. Just learning the tune was great for me. I’d like to thank Mr. Cohen for a beautiful song.

Clearing up the mystery
Hey RockerBob,
Thanks for clearing up the mystery!
The moderators here explained it yesterday, and it all made sense. I didn't realize you could go back and edit a post. That's why I couldn't figure out how there were two versions of the same message. My first instinct, and apologies to the moderators, was that one of them who really loved your take changed your message to add their own editorial comment! But conspiracy theories rarely pan out and the simplest explanation is usually where the truth lies.
Besides, the moderators here are the greatest, right?
I'm also glad to hear your comments regarding NoCat's version. I tried to download his track and was curious to hear it, but by the time I got to it, it was gone. I also agree with AllThumbs that a finished painting is just that -- finished. But I think music is a little different. I wonder how many versions of Greensleeves have been played over the centuries. I wonder if anyone really captured the "one definitive take."
Playing along to your version, learning the song, and even trying to sing along, was loads of fun, uplifting, and taught me a lot. I played it for my guitar teacher last night.
Anyway, that's the last word from me on this, I have no hard feelings whatsoever.
But I did learn that if I post something I really don't want to say.. I still have a change to go back and change it! That's good to know!

If you really paint yourself in a corner, just P.M. one of the mods and ask them to delete your post for you.

Ive posted how great i found this version before, but it still baffles me every time i hear it.
I just got my guitar back after 2 weeks and was dying to try it out, not having too much trouble but with the B chord, would be nice if you wrote a guitar pro tab for it, sure it would make top 10 on my song book in not time
Thanks for the great music

BTW, I always cheat for B. I just play the B in the 5th string and bar strings 4,3 and 2 with my ring finger. I don't play the high E string.

I am new here and i am deadly jealous of that singing voice, that is fantastic, for a man who can't hold a note in a bucket that is just making me really green.
Nice playing too.
Do you sing and play or overdub the voice afterwards?

Thanks!
On this recording I overdubbed the vocal. It lets me concentrated a bit more on each part. It also lets me mic the guitar farther away without vocal bleeding in. I tend to prefer the sound of the guitar if the mic is back at least 18".
