Hybrid Picking Demo Video - Page 3

Here is a video I put together as a demonstration of hybrid picking. That is, fingerpicking while holding a flatpick. I'm not much of a teacher, but I was having fun playing with 2 cameras and video editting software, which allowed me to inset a closer view of my right hand. Anyway, this is almost 10MB, so it might be a while if you are on dialup.

It's a QuickTime movie, so Apple's QuickTime should do it.

that was great, is a cool technique.. but i think is easier to use only fingers..

Fingers might be easier, but overall I find the hybrid is easier for me than switching from a flatpick to fingers and back again. I intermix flatpicking and fingerpicking all the time, so this works great for me. It's not for everyone.

That last bit was cute hehe - may I ask, what type of video editor did you use? I'm getting into that stuff a little bit but so far I'm limited to just creating slideshows. ...some day I'd love to record a tutorial/lesson type deal.

I used Final Cut Pro on a mac to do the spilt screen.

Ohhh Windows user here so I can't exactly 'give it a go'. I used to use Windows Movie Maker but I've moved on to Pinnacle Studio. ..but yeah anyways... cool stuffs

Hey, uh... not sure if I missed it or not, but what's that tune in the video? And, do you have the tab?

I've been interested in hybrid picking for the last year or so, but I have no idea how or what to practice. >.<

This is a little bit of a tune called "Different TImes" by Lawrence Juber. At one time - years ago, he had the tab on his website.

Juber does not play hybrid. He uses bare fingers all the time - as far as I know. Perhaps something easier to get the hybrid thing going first.

Hello everyone,

I just watched "rockerbobs" video demonstrating hybrid picking
I enjoyed it so much that it inspired me to post this question.

Would this style lend itself to being played on a semi-acoustic guitar rather than the standard acousic steel strung guitar. ???

I really fancy buying a semi acoustic ( something like an epiphone alleykat which is a little smaller that say a Gretch ) as an addition to my acoustic but have no idea how they are suited for fingerpickin.

I use this technique on all my guitars. It's just the way I play. It works for me on any guitar - acoustic, electric or somewhere between.

Any comments on nut width for your style ?

Nut width doesn't matter to me much. The guitar in the video has a 1 3/4" nut. all my other 6 string guitars have 1 11/16" nuts (except the classical, which is over 2"). The 1 3/4 is my favorite, but it's also my best acoustic guitar for many other reasons, so I'm very biased towards that guitar in general, but all my electrics have the 1 11/16" nuts.

Hi esbark,

It's easy to see why you were inspired, RB makes it look so easy.

You could also listen to (and read up on) Cliff Gallup who was the guitarist on Gene Vincent's earliest hits. He played a Gretsch hybrid style and inspired guitarists such as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Brian Setzer and many others. Some of the tunes he is featured on are Be-Bop-a-Lula, Race With the Devil, Catman and Who Slapped John.
