There's always the option of focusing on what your fretting/sliding hand is doing & letting the picking hand do what it likes to make the sounds happen.
Alot of players with 'advanced' picking technique have not learnt it, more so its come about by accident. Thats how my technique has come about, i started playing
slide & found it easier without a pick (as i dont rest any fingers behind the slide). As that progressed i started playing fretted without a pick (more out of laziness, didn't like having to grab a pick every time i put down the slide) & went from there.
If you were to analyse my technique you'd probably see some flamenco strums, a bit of walking bass & general thumb/1st finger. Its come about not because i wanted it that way but because it feels right.
My advice would be to just play & if it feels right do it.
