I really fancy buying a semi acoustic ( something like an epiphone alleykat which is a little smaller that say a Gretch ) as an addition to my acoustic but have no idea how they are suited for fingerpickin.

I use this technique on all my guitars. It's just the way I play. It works for me on any guitar - acoustic, electric or somewhere between.
